ORAL APPLIANCE THERAPY
There are a variety of oral appliances that are optimal for treating snoring and sleep apnea.
Oral appliances work by manipulating the lower jaw and tongue away from the back of the throat, preventing blockages and opening the airway so that you can sleep better. Since obstructive sleep apnea is considered a serious health risk, many medical insurances cover some of the costs associated with medical treatment.
The Somnomed™ MAS is an effective treatment for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Its unique design permits the user to open and close their mouth normally making it very comfortable to wear. It can be used in some cases to treat severe obstructive sleep apnea.
The Herbst appliance has been used for many years in the treatment of children during orthodontics. With minor modifications, the Herbst appliance has been proven to be effective in the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate OSA. “Adjustability” is the primary advantage of the Herbst appliance in snoring and OSA cases. The post and sleeve mechanism advances the jaw into a forward position. If desired relief is not immediately achieved, this unique appliance design allows for additional forward movement of the mandible.
The Thornton Adjustable Positioner® (TAP®) is an oral appliance similar to an athletic mouth guard that is worn while sleeping. Developed with advanced technology, the TAP® reduces sleep apnea and associated health risks without the need for surgery, medications, or other more cumbersome therapy.
